If you’re in the market for an air hockey table, the first thing you need to consider is the space you have available. In this article, I’ll take you through the dimensions of common sizes of air hockey table and exactly how much room you need around the table to get a good playing experience.
How Much Space for an Air Hockey Table?
14’ x 8’ (4.3 x 2.4 m) of space is recommended to fit a full-size 8ft air hockey table. A minimum of 13′ x 6′ (4.0 x 1.8 m) of space is required for an 8ft table. For a standard 7ft air hockey table, a minimum of 12′ x 6′ (3.7 x 1.8 m) of space is needed but 13′ x 8′ (4.0 x 2.4 m) is recommended.
Guidelines:
- Ideally have 3′ (0.9 m) of space available at each end of the table. The minimum amount of space at each end of the table should be 2’6″ (0.75 m).
- Ideally have 2′ (0.6 m) of space available at either side (lengthways) of the table (minimum of 1′ on either side).
For example, if the air hockey table measures 7′ x 4′ (2.14 m x 1.22 m), you’ll ideally want to have 13′ x 8′ (3.96 x 2.44 m) of total space. At a minimum, you’ll need 12′ x 6′ (3.66 x 1.83 m) of total space.
Air Hockey Table Size | Minimum Space Needed | Ideal Space Needed |
8’ x 4’ | 13′ x 6’ | 14’ x 8’ |
7’ x 4’ | 12’ x 6’ | 13’ x 8’ |
6’ x 3’ | 11’ x 5’ | 12’ x 7’ |
Air Hockey Table Dimensions
Full size air hockey tables are around 8′ x 4′, however standard-size tables are 7′ x 4′. The smaller 6′ x 3′ size is also popular for home use.
Here is a table comparing the different types of air hockey table and their measurements using either the imperial or metric system (length x width).
Air Hockey Table | Measurements (Imperial) | Measurements (Metric) |
Full Size | 8’ x 4’ (96” x 48”) | 2.44 x 1.22 m |
Regulation | 7’ x 4’ (84” x 48”) | 2.14 x 1.22 m |
Home | 6’ x 3’ (72” x 36”) | 1.84 x 0.91 m |
Small | 5’ x 3’ (60” x 36”) | 1.52 x 0.91 m |
Mini | 4’ x 2” (48” x 24”) | 1.22 x 0.61 m |
Table Top | 3’ x 1’6″ (36” x 18”) | 0.90 x 0.46 m |
Space is Needed Around the Table
Having at least around 3′ (24″ or 0.6 m) of space around all the sides of an air hockey table is recommended.
- The amount of space needed on the short end of the table (width), where the player stands is the most important. There should be at least 2’6″ of room, but ideally 3′ at either end.
- You don’t need as much room on the long end of the table (length), since the players do not stand here. However, at least 1′ of space on either side is required. Ideally there should be 2′ on either side to play more comfortably and avoid potentially knocking an elbow on the wall.
Here are some tables showing how much room you’ll need for an air hockey table (length x width).
Measurements in Feet
Air Hockey Table Size | Minimum Space Needed | Ideal Space Needed |
8’ x 4’ | 13′ x 6’ | 14’ x 8’ |
7’ x 4’ | 12’ x 6’ | 13’ x 8’ |
6’ x 3’ | 11’ x 5’ | 12’ x 7’ |
5’ x 3’ | 10’ x 5′ | 11′ x 7′ |
Measurements in Inches
Air Hockey Table Size | Minimum Space Needed | Ideal Space Needed |
96” x 48” | 156” x 72” | 168” x 96” |
84” x 48” | 144” x 72” | 156” x 96” |
72” x 36” | 132” x 60” | 144” x 84” |
60” x 36” | 120” x 60” | 132” x 84” |
Measurements in Meters
Air Hockey Table Size | Minimum Space Needed | Ideal Space Needed |

1.83 x 0.91 m | 3.35 x 1.52 m | 3.66 x 2.13 m |
1.52 x 0.91 m | 3.05 x 1.52 m | 3.35 x 2.13 m |
Can you put an air hockey table against a wall?
It is possible to put an air hockey table against a wall since players generally only move on the ends of the table. However, it can make it difficult to reach the puck if it stops in the centre and some players find it limits their movement when playing so it is best to have a gap between the table and wall.
